Rekey or replace
When replacement makes sense
If the lock works well and the question is who has a key, rekey it: the hardware stays and the old keys stop working. Replace the lock when the lock itself is the problem:
- The key sticks, turns roughly or only works at a certain angle, even after cleaning.
- The knob or lever is loose, wobbles or will not spring back.
- The deadbolt or latch is bent, cracked or damaged after a break-in attempt.
- The finish has failed in the sun, or the lock has corroded.
- The hardware is too light for the door, such as a front door with a knob and no deadbolt.
- You want something different: a new style, a deadbolt where there is none, or a keypad or smart lock.
Lock functions
Exterior security and interior privacy are different jobs
Each door needs the right function, not just the right look.
- Keyed entry knob or lever: locks with a key outside and a button or turn inside. On an exterior door, pair it with a deadbolt.
- Deadbolt: the main security lock on an exterior door. A single-cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a thumb-turn inside; a double-cylinder model needs a key on both sides.
- Handleset: a decorative outside grip with a thumb latch, paired with a deadbolt.
- Privacy: a push-button or turn inside for bathrooms and bedrooms, with an emergency release outside. It keeps people from walking in; it is not a security lock.
- Passage: no lock at all, for hallways and closets that only need to latch.
Common mix-ups
Where the wrong function causes trouble
A privacy lock on a garage entry door, or a passage set on a side door, leaves the house less secure than it looks. In the other direction, a double-cylinder deadbolt stops someone reaching through glass to turn the lock, but it also needs a key to get out. Think about how everyone in the house would leave in an emergency before choosing one.
Look for the BHMA (ANSI) grade on the package: Grade 1 is the heaviest-duty rating and Grade 3 the lightest. An exterior deadbolt that gets daily use is worth a Grade 1 or Grade 2 lock.
Compatibility
What has to match: door, backset, latch, strike and keyway
Tell us the brand on your current locks and send photos of the door edge, and we will tell you what fits before we book.
- Bore: the large hole through the face of the door. Most residential locks fit a standard bore; older doors may differ.
- Backset: the distance from the door edge to the center of that hole, usually 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. Many latches adjust to both.
- Door thickness: most locks fit standard doors; a thicker or thinner door may need different parts.
- Latch and bolt faceplate: round drive-in, square-corner and round-corner faceplates have to match how the door edge is cut, or the edge needs re-cutting.
- Strike: the plate on the frame. A worn or misaligned strike stops even a new lock from latching. A reinforced strike with long screws into the framing makes a deadbolt harder to kick in.
- Keyway: Kwikset and Schlage use different keys. To run the house on one key, new locks need a compatible keyway, or a cylinder has to be changed to match.
Keyed or keyless
A mechanical lock, or a keypad or smart lock
A solid mechanical deadbolt is simple and needs no batteries. A keypad or smart deadbolt takes the key out of daily use and lets you manage codes, with batteries and a backup key to look after.

We confirm the fit and give you a clear estimate before any work starts. The technician removes the old hardware, fits and aligns the new lock and strike, and checks that the door locks and latches with the door closed.
Our service vans carry a key machine and a pinning kit, so new locks can be keyed to match each other or your existing keys, and the keys cut on site.

I had to use this locksmith on Monday, which happened to be a holiday, and I couldn’t have been more impressed with the service! They responded incredibly quickly, were very professional and friendly, and had the job taken care of fast. Their customer service was excellent, especially considering it was a holiday. One of our front door locks failed completely on a Friday afternoon. Customers still coming in, employees trying to leave for the weekend. Not a good situation. If your business is in Chandler and you need commercial lock work done fast, Diamondback Lock and Key is who you want. Been in this building almost 14 years and dealt with a few locksmiths over that time. Nobody moved this quick. They had someone out before I even had time to start stressing about it. The tech knew exactly what he was looking at. Didn't try to sell me a full replacement when a repair was the right call. That matters when you're standing there watching the clock. Everything was solid by the time he left and we didn't lose more than an hour of business. For a commercial property owner thats everything.

Louis was amazing. I was dealing with an “incorrect key ID” error and a car that wouldn’t start. After programming the key, he wasn’t satisfied when the problem came back and strongly suggested I have the battery tested again. He was right. It turned out I had both a key issue and a failing battery. What stood out most was his customer service. I was stressed, overwhelmed, and having a rough day, and he treated me with kindness, patience, and a great attitude. He genuinely cared about solving the problem instead of just completing the job. Highly recommend!

Our back door at the shop was a nightmare. You'd push it shut and it just wouldn't catch unless you basically kicked it into place. Eran from Diamondback Lock and Key in Chandler came out, took one look at it, and said the mechanism was dry. He hit it with graphite spray and the door closed smooth on the first try. Charged us a reasonable amount for the visit. Wish I'd called sooner.
Should I rekey or replace my locks?
Rekey when the lock works and the question is who has a key; replace when the lock is worn, damaged or the wrong hardware.
Many homes end up with a mix: rekey the sound locks and replace the one that has worn out.
Will a new lock fit my door?
Usually, if the bore, backset and edge preparation match.

Can new locks use the same key as my other doors?
Yes, when the keyways are compatible.
If they are not, a cylinder may need changing first. Kwikset and Schlage keys are not interchangeable.
Is a double-cylinder deadbolt more secure?
It stops someone reaching through nearby glass to turn the lock, but it needs a key to get out too.
Think about how everyone in the house would get out in an emergency before choosing one.
