Mailbox Lock Repair and Replacement

A lost mailbox key or a broken mailbox lock is a small job with one big question first: who owns the box. We repair, rekey and replace mailbox locks on boxes you own, or with the authorization of whoever does.

Who owns your mailbox?

The owner of the box decides who may change its lock, so start there.

  • Your own mailbox, on a post or a wall at your home: yours to repair or replace, and we can do it for you.
  • A Postal Service-owned cluster box unit: the post office handles its compartment locks and keys. Contact the post office that serves it. We do not change locks on Postal Service-owned compartments without the Postal Service’s authority.
  • A cluster box owned by the builder, HOA or property manager: the owner handles locks and keys. Ask them first; with their authorization, we can change your compartment lock.
  • An apartment or condo mailbox bank: usually the property manager’s responsibility, and the same rule applies.
Not sure?

If you do not know who owns the box

Ask your HOA or property manager, or the post office that delivers to the box. A neighborhood cluster box looks the same whether the Postal Service or the community owns it, so the box itself will not tell you.

Lost key or broken lock

Lost keys and damaged locks are different jobs

Lost or stolen key: the lock still works, but someone else may have the key. If it could be in someone else’s hands, rekey or replace the lock so it stops working. If you are sure the key is simply gone, a new key cut for the existing lock may be enough.

Damaged lock: a lock that has been pried, drilled or forced, that has seized, or that spins without catching needs replacing. A bent door or a broken hinge may mean the box itself needs repair or replacement as well.

If mail may have been stolen, report it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service as well as getting the lock changed.

Will it fit?

Mailbox lock compatibility

Most home and cluster mailbox compartments use a small cam lock: a cylinder through the door, with a flat cam on the back that turns to hold the door shut. A replacement has to match the cylinder length, the shape of the hole, the cam’s length and shape, and which way it turns.

Locking curbside and wall-mount mailboxes often use the maker’s own lock, so the make and model of the box matter. A photo of the front of the lock, and of the back if you can open the box, usually tells us what fits.

What to expect

What to tell us, and what happens next

We confirm the job and the price before booking, and you get a clear estimate before any work starts. Our service vans carry key machines and pinning kits, so the lock can be rekeyed or replaced and new keys cut at the box. If a matching lock has to be ordered, we tell you up front.

  • What kind of mailbox it is: your own, a cluster box or an apartment bank, and who owns it
  • Whether the key is lost or the lock is damaged
  • Photos of the lock front and, if possible, the back
  • The make of the box, if you know it
  • For an HOA or manager-owned box, their authorization or a contact we can confirm it with
Cost

What affects the price

You get the price before any work starts. It depends on:

  • Rekeying the existing lock, or fitting a new one
  • The type of mailbox and the lock it takes
  • Whether a damaged lock has to be drilled out
  • How many keys you need
  • How many compartments, when an HOA or manager changes several at once

I had to use this locksmith on Monday, which happened to be a holiday, and I couldn’t have been more impressed with the service! They responded incredibly quickly, were very professional and friendly, and had the job taken care of fast. Their customer service was excellent, especially considering it was a holiday. I really appreciated how easy and stress-free they made the whole situation. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a reliable and responsive locksmith!

Needed the house rekeyed this morning after an old roommate moved out and I didn't trust that every copy came back. Diamondback Lock and Key made it quick and easy, in and out in under an hour for four locks.

One of our front door locks failed completely on a Friday afternoon. Customers still coming in, employees trying to leave for the weekend. Not a good situation. If your business is in Chandler and you need commercial lock work done fast, Diamondback Lock and Key is who you want. Been in this building almost 14 years and dealt with a few locksmiths over that time. Nobody moved this quick. They had someone out before I even had time to start stressing about it. The tech knew exactly what he was looking at. Didn't try to sell me a full replacement when a repair was the right call. That matters when you're standing there watching the clock. Everything was solid by the time he left and we didn't lose more than an hour of business. For a commercial property owner thats everything.

Louis was amazing. I was dealing with an “incorrect key ID” error and a car that wouldn’t start. After programming the key, he wasn’t satisfied when the problem came back and strongly suggested I have the battery tested again. He was right. It turned out I had both a key issue and a failing battery. What stood out most was his customer service. I was stressed, overwhelmed, and having a rough day, and he treated me with kindness, patience, and a great attitude. He genuinely cared about solving the problem instead of just completing the job. Highly recommend!

Never used them before but Luis came out last week and got our business locks working again and I was so relieved it didn't take all day.

Our back door at the shop was a nightmare. You'd push it shut and it just wouldn't catch unless you basically kicked it into place. Eran from Diamondback Lock and Key in Chandler came out, took one look at it, and said the mechanism was dry. He hit it with graphite spray and the door closed smooth on the first try. Charged us a reasonable amount for the visit. Wish I'd called sooner.

FAQ

Common questions

If yours is not here, call and ask — (602) 388-1201.

Can a locksmith make a mailbox key?

Yes, for a mailbox you own or are authorized to change.

We can usually cut a key for the existing lock, or rekey or replace the lock. For a Postal Service-owned box, go to the post office.

Who replaces the lock on a cluster mailbox?

The box owner: the Postal Service for its own units, or the builder, HOA or property manager for privately owned ones.

Ask them first. With a private owner’s authorization, we can change the compartment lock.

I lost my mailbox key. Rekey or replace?

Rekey or replace the lock if the key could be in someone else’s hands.

If you are sure nobody else has it, a new key for the existing lock may be enough.

My mailbox was broken into. What should I do?

Report the mail theft to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, then have the damaged lock replaced.

If the box itself is damaged, its owner may need to repair or replace it too.
